Airnet Wireless Inc. is the culmination of a process that started in 1998. Back then, head of Operations and Technology, Carl Jeptha, was working for a company in Pickering and commuting to and fro. Carl was servicing several large corporations’ networking, computing and printer needs in downtown Toronto, Woodbridge, Markham, Mississauga and Burlington.
The owners of the company decided to branch out into High Speed Wireless Internet Service. On a very cold February winter’s day, Carl erected his first radio tower. Back then the equipment was cumbersome, very large, and – compared to today’s standards – very slow with maximum speeds of 256 kbps (Kilobits per second). Nonetheless, “High Speed” Internet access had arrived to the Pickering industrial area south of Highway 401.
In 1999 Carl decided that Northumberland County could be serviced in the same way, but it would have to be rolled out on a much larger scale. After many stop and starts, Airnet Wireless Inc. was incorporated on June 06, 2002 and began offering “high speed” internet services to it’s customers.
When we started in 2002 we were only broadcasting off the new watertower in Cobourg which required a very clear LOS (Line Of Sight) to our receivers, with a maximum transmission distance of 4km (yes, we were there as the first tenants of the Cobourg water tower at it’s official opening!). Over the years, we have expanded the network by adding more towers and upgrading our hardware. Today Airnet Wireless Inc. services most of Northumberland county, as can be seen in our coverage map, using state-of-the-art equipment by a leading North American supplier.
